5 Reasons To Love Our Cedar Log Collection

Cedar log furniture has a special history to all of us at Lonesome Cottage, and this collection holds a special place in our hearts. We began with cedar log furniture and know this classic type has a special place in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Want to know why? Here are 5 reasons:

Character

We specialize in rustic wood furniture, and we love how much character cedar logs bring to a home or cabin. We don’t take any shortcuts in bringing the best out of our Cedar Log Collection. We peel our furniture by hand and not machine so the wood can be examined to ensure great quality and to preserve its natural beauty which includes knots, beetle galleries, and worm tracks that give each piece a unique, one-of-a-kind look.

Local

Northern white cedar is native to Canada, the Northeast, and right here in the Upper Midwest which includes northern Minnesota. With our production facility established in Pequot Lakes, it made sense to take this beautiful species of cedar and use it to create rustic furniture. By using it to make cedar furniture, we can share it with our customers who are seeking a rustic style.

Light

Cedar has a low moisture content compared to other softwoods. With less moisture, cedar is low in weight, resistant to rot, and heirloom quality. To make cedar even lighter, we season it to make sure it is ready for easy peeling which is done by hand and not machine. This is so that the wood can be examined to ensure great quality and to preserve its natural beauty.

Sustainable

Cedar is one of the most sustainable woods out there. For example, it can grow in a variety of soils according to the USDA which makes it more robust and not require as much cultivation. We use every piece of our responsibly-harvested cedar when manufacturing our furniture. We use it down to the last twig. The lower portion of the tree is milled into dimensional lumber for furniture and construction products. The tops of the trees are transformed into furniture components like legs and spindles. The bark, branches, and wood by-products are fully utilized to make cedar landscape mulch and chips. Any pieces we can’t use like sawdust are used to heat our production facility.
